Buying a home has always been important milestone in the life of a family - fostering a sense of security and investment, of putting down roots. But today fewer Dallas families are reaching that goal. Homeownership rates have fallen by 16% since 1960, a fact that makes the work of United Housing Program, which builds not only homes but entire neighborhoods, so important. Unlike most developers, UHP targets low-income families who cannot afford the cost of a market rate home, providing credit counseling, homebuyer education and subsidies to help lower purchase costs. UHP families often end up paying less than $60,000 for their new home.

“When my family came to Dallas we moved into the projects, which is where I grew up. I wanted more for my Mom and Dad. I wanted their dream to come true where they would be in a nice home, but that never happened.

I watched my house going up everyday from when it was dirt, to a frame and so on. I still could not believe it was going to be my house. When it finally happened and I went to sign the papers I felt like this was my Mom’s dream finally come true. It was unbelievable!”
