Houston’s first Single Room Occupancy (SRO) residence
The belief that housing is “more than a roof” is central to the success of New Hope Housing, a non-profit corporation whose mission is to serve the very poor. New Hope’s first project, the Hamilton Street Residence, supplements low-cost housing with a Resident Support Program that offers emergency loans, transportation, and access to social services. Residents pay only $280 per month, including utilities, to live in at this downtown property.
With more than 9,200 homeless Houstonites, and 125,000 marginally homeless, the need for New Hope’s services is great. Christ Church Cathedral Episcopal incorporated New Hope Housing, Inc. in 1993. Since opening Hamilton Street in 1995, New Hope has grown from 43 untis to 130.

Recognizing that low-income housing is critical to the revitalization of inner-city Houston, New Hope is currently planning the development of 900 additional SRO units
